2011 Palpung Scholarship Winners
The 2011 Palpung Lungtok Choeling Scholarships were awarded Saturday 7/30/11. For 20 high school graduates and college bound young people, it was a day to be recognized for their hard work academically and their strength in overcoming numerous hardships to realize their dream of being accepted to a university to continue their education.
At the ceremony, which took place at the Palpung Temple in San Jose, the young people spoke of their hopes and dreams for the future. Most will be the first in their family to attend college. They want to be educators, doctors, pharmacists and social workers but they all have a common goal... to give back to the community to make the world a better place. All of the winners, who are from around the bay area - Oakland, San Francisco, Gilroy, Soledad, Vacaville, San Jose, Milpitas, Fremont and San Jose - spent countless hours during their high school years, working with their communities. They've been accepted by UC and CSU universities as well as Vassar, Santa Clara and Smith.
In addition to the scholarships, the winners also received Certificates of Recognition from the San Jose City Council awarded by Council Member Kansen Chu and from the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors, George Shirakawa's office. The San Jose City Council and the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors also presented Palpung Lungtok Choeling with Commendation Awards for their services to the community. The temple not only sponsors the scholarships but also works to provide clothing and supplies as well as food for the homeless and needy.
